The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a daily reminder that it is our responsibility as beauty professionals to keep ourselves, other employees, and the clients we serve safe and virus-free by adhering to the safety guidelines recommended by federal agencies such as the CDC and OSHA.
Visit the CDC’s site on Coronavirus (COVID-19) for continuous updates and actions to take to protect yourself. Learn more at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html.
As a licensed beauty professional, I work in an occupation that requires personal contact with others. This means I have the very real opportunity to spread—or stop—communicable disease.
Together, we can break the chain of transmission!
Check out the Downloadable Resources section for a general reopening checklist and a letter to clients explaining the lengths you have taken to safeguard their welfare in our uncertain world.
Q: How do I prescreen for sick clients?
A: Use your customary appointment reminder and confirmation to ask about client wellness. If you use an automated service for appointment confirmation, look into customizing the message that clients receive before confirming or follow-up with a phone call 24 hours in advance. If clients are feeling sick, urge them to reschedule for when they are well again. If clients have to reschedule due to health, consider waving cancellation policies/fees and reassure them that you will see them again as soon as possible. Once a client enters the salon it will be too late to ensure the safety of clients and coworkers.
Q: What do I do if a client comes in with visible signs of illness?
A: While no beauty professional wants to turn a client away for services, it’s your responsibility to be aware of the visible signs of good, or not so good, health your clients may display. It is part of your job to refuse service if there is a concern about infectious conditions. You’re not being mean, you’re simply trying to protect the health and safety of yourself, your coworkers, and your other clients. This is the same measure you have always taken, whether it is for a rash, the flu, or the coronavirus.
Q: What can I do to help minimize the transmission of disease in the salon, spa, or barbershop?
A: Follow these guidelines:
